European Union Enlargement: A Status Report on Turkey's Accession Negotiations

October 3, 2006, marked the first anniversary of the European Union's decision to proceed with formal negotiations with Turkey toward full membership in the Union. However, the occasion was marked with neither a recognition of Turkey's positive accomplishments nor a diminishing skepticism on the part of many Europeans that Turkey should be embraced as a member of the European family. Rather, the talk is of train crashes, the suspension of negotiations, expressions of doubt, and renewed suggestions that Turkey should never be admitted into the Union.
