Honduran-U.S. Relations
Today, overall U.S. policy goals for Honduras include a strengthened democracy with an effective justice system that protects human rights and promotes the rule of law, and the promotion of sustainable economic growth with a more open economy and improved living conditions. The United States also cooperates with Honduras to deal with such transnational issues as narcotics trafficking, money laundering, the fight against terrorism, illegal migration, and trafficking in persons, and supports Honduran efforts to protect the environment and combat HIV/AIDS. There are over 800,000 Hondurans residing in the United States, who sent some $2.4 billion in remittances to Honduras in 2006, or about one fourth of the country's gross domestic product.
