CENSUS 2000: NEW LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS


Seven bills have been reported thus far in the 106th Congress that would affect the implementation of the 2000 decennial census. All seven were approved by the Government Reform Committee on March 17, 1999. They are: H.R. 472, to reinstate review of the initial census figures by localities; H.R. 683, to permit recipients of federal assistance to work as enumerators without reduction of their benefits; H.R. 928, to require a replacement mailing of census questionnaires; H.R. 929, to require the printing of short-form census questionnaires in at least 33 languages besides English; H.R. 1009, to foster community involvement in the census; H.R. 1010, to augment census promotional activities; and H.R. 1058, to educate school children about the census.
